Conveluded thought process at work... This is how I come up with ideas...
Thought came to me while trying to do some water drop shots a while ago. I used a syringe to do the drops. I was doing the drop thing in a sink. I saw a pipe. Remembering my junkie lingo I thought of the term "fix". Then I thought of "fixing the pipe". A shot I plan on doing is sticking a needle into a piece of elbow PVC pipe and calling it "fixing the pipe... But I digress...
I wanted to do a series of double entendre's with a syringe. So for the next few weeks I will obcess on ideas I have been thinking about for a while. Hopefully they won't bore you to tears. They won't have the absolute deep thought that some of my other shots have. They will be more an expression of ideas...
Technicals of note... Shot this shot without the drop. I was good looking but still not great. I then tried to get one with a drop. 4 hours and 300 expsures went by with no luck. I then took my faithful cornsyrup and food coloring mixture and made it sort of brown. I let the stuff sit around for about 2 hours until it got real soupy then dropped. This drop hung on the end of they syringe for over 2 minutes.
8 Lights used. All household, all using GE Reveal light bulbs (can be picked up any where that sells light bulbs). Most were 40 and 60 watts to add ambient light. I hung 1 light above it with a 250 watter to generate the shadows and highlights...
Canon 1D, Canon 100mm 2.8 Macro, f16@125th. And I have to mention my Gitzo 320 tripod. Rock solid support... It rocks...
hrm i really like this idea as well as the focusing but im not so sure about the tight crop and all the vertical lines.. by verticals i mean the picture is portrait then the needle is vertical and the handle is vertical.. *gets vertigo trying to explain*
Let me ramble first; I did a shoot with water droplets I sprinkled on a tulip for a fresh look. Heheh. Not only did I get most of the surrounding dining room table wet, but in the process of trying to keep my solid white background propped up and camera steady I knocked over the cup of water I had been using to sprinkle the flowers. Since then, I have taken a break on playing with water!
Really interesting idea. I love the cropping of the cup and the detail in the syringe. Awesome droplet! LOL. The only thing that looks a bit weird is the cornsyrup mix in the syringe; it does look more like sugary syrup than coffee or tea, but that's just minor.
I love how this is a neutral toned piece except for that great brilliant teal-blue reflection on the syringe. Just really neat.
As for the concept, the idea. I know many people who need their morning coffee to get going. I usually have coffee in the morning as well, but mostly when I'm at work. I could go without it, but it has become habit. *shrug* I drink tea in the evening soley because it is habit. A hot cup of tea and maybe a piece of applesauce cake, it's how I end my evening. Coffee I drink probably because it's a typical morning habit, and the caffiene probably does get me going a bit. Tea I drink because I love the taste and it's relaxing. Not so much an addiction to the caffiene I think as the comforting conotations associated with it (to me, at least.)
Wonderful shot, I'm loving the detail in it. Seriously. Now whenever I see people drinking ocffee I'm going to have a mental image of this syringe!
that drop is perfect, it looks just exactly right. darn you perfectionist types getting everything just right. i love the ring of coffee inside the cup to. and the balance is amazing.
Very nice shot! Interesting ideas behind it, too.
The droplet looks a little syrup-like, too thick for coffee. Perhaps next time you do a shot using corn syrup, don't let the mixture sit quite so long.

I've given up the search on reality; now I'm just looking for a good fantasy.

I love coffee ... in fact I am 'somewhat' addicted to it. SO much so that when I haven't had any, I get serious headaches.
Personally, I love the 'vertigo' * hexentanz mentions. It's saying to me 'control', as well as the lack thereof.
Great job Dave!!
